What is a yard lead?

A yard lead is a track that extends out in front of the yard. It's purpose is to provide space for the switching engine to manipulate the cars in the yard without fouling or interfering with the main line traffic. It should be long enough to pull out all the cars from the longest yard track. In other words, the switcher should be able to make the yard's longest switching movement without going onto the main line trackage.
