The Rock Ridge and Train City II

Plan and Overview:

Click The towns of Rock Ridge and Train City are fictitious towns along the Overland Route of the Southern Pacific in the year 1891. The name Rock Ridge admittedly comes from the movie Blazing Saddles, but the only nod to the movie is a model of the character "Mongo." Train City was named by my then 8-year-old autistic son when he looked at the track-work and standing cars and exclaimed, "This looks like Train City."

The layout, Rock Ridge and Train City I, came as a reaction to my son and daughter's sudden lack of interest in model railroading. When I realized this, I stopped working on the "Hogwart's Freight And Ferry" and started modeling the Old West in 1885, a subject much closer to my interests, using the already completed track work.

Overview

Phase 1
Detail

The original town of Rock Ridge was a silver mining town, but in the 6 years since the RRTCI, the town has picked up a second industry, the G& D ranch owned by Al Gorre and Ben Dephitid. Randal "Rock" Ridge has also started a timber operation that we will see in Phase two of the Rock Ridge and Train City II. The Rock Ridge Lumber Co sawmill will use the town of Rock Ridge as an interchange point with the Southern Pacific. So between the mine, sawmill, and cattle, Rock Ridge is a busy place railroad wise.

The actual town of Rock Ridge and Red Rock Canyon were salvaged from the original layout and will be dropped pretty much onto the layout as it is. The town of Train City and the Train City yard right now Exist as the PRR Indiana Branch in 1950. It will be stripped to the foam.

Train City Yard click to enlargeTrain City is a thriving small city, the largest between Roseville and Carson City. It is remote enough that all trains arriving at Train City must change power. (I worry that from an operational point of view this might become quite boring.) It has a five track yard which receives drop offs from the through freights (who have to stop to change power anyway) and from the locals. Locals from both directions originate and terminate from Train City–meaning a local originates at Train City and terminates at staging, and a local originates in staging and terminates at Train City.

Train City Detail click to enlarge I'm wondering if I could lose the double slip in Train City. My thinking is that since all trains stop in Train City, the main becomes a de facto A/D track.
