G Scale Entry 1

Borracho Traction Company

This is a large scale traction line set up in a shelf type around the room arrangement. It is intended to be at least 40" high for a >better eye level view, all rolling stock is small, 20' at most.

The Theme: is urban, the era is pre-depression 1920's, a small 3'-6" gauge traction line serving a small town that was very common at the early part of the century. Inspiration is from the Crooked Mountain Line traction layout of the late 1960's.

Operation, Passenger: The motor units are housed in the small trolley barn at the edge of the cities industrial zone. The 2 trolleys in the shed, the tougher Sparkey usually rests on the repair siding when not needed. The Trolleys operate between the nearby factories and the downtown core carrying workers too and from work, branch lines (the lines the fork off but end at the backdrop) carry passengers to the suburbs.

Freight: The HLW Sparky, a small 2 axle traction Centercab motor unit operates the small but profitable freight service to warehouses in the city. A cassette/ fiddle yard at the lower left of the layout is the interchange with the main line service. Freight is interchanged onto the lines few freight cars which are then transferred via Sparky either directly to the customer or are taken to the small yard for classification and further shunting, for outgoing cars, they are gathered in the yard, marshaled into a short train and transferred to the interchange cassette. All freight operations have to be scheduled as not to interfere with the passenger revenue services.

Rolling Stock: The older turn of the century Bachmann trolley is the warhorse, nearing the end of its days, so the management has invested in a brand new Birney trolley with the eye to retiring the older trolley but for now they operate jointly.

The HLW Sparky, a small 2 axle motor unit is the lines ugly duckling but is vital as its the only engine on the line that's strong enough to move cars on the lines profitable freight revenue service. A few box cars and flat cars service the needs of local industry.

Layout: traditional bench work, but section modules could easily be accommodated. The city building facades themselves are used as the backdrops. There are lots of opportunities for detailed urban scenes. I have included a continuous loop option in the lower left at the doorway to allow for that type of operation if so desired.
